Maths Curriculum Overview

“Nature is written in mathematical language.” – Galileo

We aim to develop children as mathematical thinkers and give them the confidence to reason and apply their maths to a wide variety of contexts.

“I love when we use food to explain Maths!”

“I like that we can do Maths outside of the classroom. It makes me feel energised.”

“I like it when we turn Maths into a game. It makes it more fun.”

At The West Grantham Church of England Primary Academy, we follow the White Rose schemes of learning which follows a mastery curriculum to ensure that all children:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that children have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Through Maths lessons, children use a range of concrete materials to help develop a conceptual understanding of different areas of the curriculum, for example Numicon and place value counters.  Once they are confident, they move onto drawing pictorial representations before progressing to abstract methods.

From years 2-6, the children also use Times Table Rock Stars to help them to improve their times table knowledge. Children take part in a classroom battles to become TT Rock Star Champions.
